Wisconsin dairy farmer Julie Maurer is continuously thinking about the future of Soaring Eagle Dairy. Her focus is on protecting the soil and water by following a nutrient management plan when applying cow manure to the fields to grow crops for the cows. The plan serves as a detailed blueprint to guide where and how much of the organic fertilizer to apply. She teams up with a certified crop consultant who takes into account all the science behind using manure as a fertilizer and maps out the different aspects of each field, such as slopes, low points and proximity to streams. The result: The crops get just the right amount of manure at just the right times and the fertilizer stays where it should.
“To our family, sustainability means producing food in a method that takes care of the resources that we use in the food production, from the animals to the people we work with, our community and the environment.”
